Shanghai has been a treasure chest filled with interesting sites and activities that
demand your attention. These were some of my favorites!
The French Concession
The French Concession was established in 1849 as a French settlement in Shanghai.
Today, it is a quaint area with European history that is worth walking through. In
addition to the history, there are hundreds of bistros, pubs, boutique shops, cafes,
and restaurants, which line the streets. If you’re ever in Shanghai, the French
Concession is a must see!
The Sunshine Center
One of my favorite activities in Shanghai was visiting the Sunshine Center. This
center educates and cares for adults with learning disabilities, Down syndrome, and
more.
We sat in a classroom alongside the students. We listened as they played musical
instruments and performed tricks using Chinese yo-yo’s. When I got to volunteer, I
went up to the front and failed miserably while attempting basic motions with the
yo-yo’s.
Before we left, we played ping-pong with the students. They were all really skilled!
After ping-pong we gave some toys and candy to the students and climbed back into
the van home.
Financial Center
This picture was taken at the top of the Shanghai World Financial Center. The view
was breath-taking. We traveled to the Observatory Deck on the 100th floor and
gazed out at the city lights. This view overlooks the Huangpu River, the Bund, and
the financial district. The colorful ferries lit up the river as they passed by. I have
never seen a more beautiful view in my life.
